He learned his music from his father John Kelly, the renowned fiddle and concertina player from County Clare. After years of careful study and practice, James began his recording and touring career at age sixteen. That year he won first place in the prestigious "Fiddler of the Year" competition and recorded his first album, a duet with his brother John. Since that time, James has toured Europe, the US, Canada and South America, and was a member of several influential Irish groups, including "Patrick Street" and the legendary folk group "Planxty." He was a presenter of the "Pure Drop" series for Irish TV and has appeared several times with the Grammy award winning Irish group, "The Chieftains." In the US, James has performed several times on Garrison Keillor's national radio show, "A Prairie Home Companion." It's strange really, when you consider that each and every one of us does this at least once or twice a day. Yet many people, and the English in particular, are rather embarrassed when talking about going to the toilet. The English, being somewhat reluctant to admit that they do go to the toilet, have invented many expressions to sanitise this rather natural bodily function. Perhaps it is this embarrassment about our natural bodily functions that makes toilet humour so popular in Hollywood movies and for stand-up comedians. Ros Johnson, the Head of the science department, said: "When I started teaching science, we just had a blackboard really, and we'd have these models as well. So you'd stand in front of the class with a model and you'd try to get everybody to see it and perhaps you'd pass it around and then people at the back would get irritated because they didn't have it. And then we got the projectors onto whiteboard and we could use animation and things moved and it was better. And now we've got the 3D. Absolutely everybody in the class can see the 3D, it's hanging in the middle of the classroom, the image, you can rotate it so they can all look at it, you don't need to pass it around anymore and it's fantastic." The jury may stilll be out when it comes to 3D in cinemas but in education teachers are finding it invaluable. 'Chanakya' was a renowned Indian scholar and teacher to the Maurya Emperor Chandragupta. The marshmallow experiment is a famous test of this concept conducted by Walter Mischel at Stanford University and discussed by Daniel Goleman in his popular work. In the 1960s, a group of four-year olds were given a marshmallow and promised another, only if they could wait 20 minutes before eating the first one. Some children could wait and others could not. The researchers then followed the progress of each child into adolescence, and demonstrated that those with the ability to wait were better adjusted and more dependable (determined via surveys of their parents and teachers), and scored an average of 210 points higher on the Scholastic Aptitude Test.

Jiddu Krishnamurti was born on 11 May 1895 in Madanapalle, a small town in south India. He and his brother were adopted in their youth by Dr Annie Besant, then president of the Theosophical Society. Dr Besant and others proclaimed that Krishnamurti was to be a world teacher whose coming the Theosophists had predicted. To prepare the world for this coming, a world-wide organization called the Order of the Star in the East was formed and the young Krishnamurti was made its head. In 1929, however, Krishnamurti renounced the role that he was expected to play, dissolved the Order with its huge following, and returned all the money and property that had been donated for this work. The Electronic Visualization Laboratory (EVL) was founded in 1973. Throughout all that time, EVL has focused on the same basic areas. We primarily do research in the areas of advanced display design, visualization and digital analytics, high-speed networking, interaction and collaboration. Almost all the work done at EVL is interdisciplinary and collaborative; we work with people in art, the earth sciences, learning sciences, biomedical researchers, education, cognitive science, and other fields to apply our expertise to real problems in those disciplines. At EVL, we develop a new display device every couple of years to support new ways for visualizing and interacting with data. In the '90s, we revolutionized virtual reality by creating the projector-based CAVE. In the 2000's, we created the highest resolution display wall on the planet. We also create desks and tables, and tabletop displays. All of these displays are big to support collaborative, interdisciplinary work. Some of our students focus on integrating the hardware, others on writing the middleware that drive the hardware; some focus on working with domain scientists to create new applications to take advantage of that hardware.
