Going to the Toilet | Learn English | Vocabulary Tube. Duration : 9.58 Mins.
EXTRAS: linguaspectrum.com Online language learning and teaching: linguaspectrumplus.com Here is a subject you won't find in any detail in any of your English textbooks. It's strange really, when you consider that each and every one of us does this at least once or twice a day. Yet many people, and the English in particular, are rather embarrassed when talking about going to the toilet. The English, being somewhat reluctant to admit that they do go to the toilet, have invented many expressions to sanitise this rather natural bodily function. Perhaps it is this embarrassment about our natural bodily functions that makes toilet humour so popular in Hollywood movies and for stand-up comedians. But this is not a modern phenomenon, this aversion to accept our body's natural processes. Around 1781, Benjamin Franklin wrote an essay entitled, Fart Proudly, in which he suggested to the Royal Academy of Brussels that research ought to be undertaken into ways of improving the odour of the human fart. Raucously funny, the essay has nevertheless been excluded from most published collections of Franklin's writings. I fully expect this video to upset my more genteel viewers, so don't be shy in complaining about the content in the comments below the video. Let's take a look at some of this vocabulary that you won't easily find elsewhere. When I was in the military, I once told our appalling army chef that he was a genius. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix Video Clips. Duration : 138.08 Mins.
In Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Harry returns for his fifth year of study at Hogwarts only to discover that much of the wizarding community has been led to believe that the story of the teenager's recent encounter with the evil Lord Voldemort is a lie, putting Harry's integrity in question. Worse, the Minister for Magic, Cornelius Fudge, has appointed a new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, the duplicitous Professor Dolores Umbridge. But Professor Umbridge's "Ministry-approved" course of defensive magic leaves the young wizards woefully unprepared to defend themselves against the Dark Forces threatening them, so at the prompting of his friends Hermione and Ron, Harry is convinced to take matters into his own hands. Meeting secretly with a small group of students who name themselves "Dumbledore's Army," Harry teaches them how to defend themselves against the Dark Arts, preparing the courageous young wizards for the extraordinary battle that lies ahead. There are different ways of explaining these sounds, and not all will agree with my explanations. There can be arguments over which sounds we are combining. I note, for example, that some say we should end with /ɪ/ or /ʊ/ with these three diphthongs. I liked Rebecca Dauer's explanation that says we move towards /i/ or /u/. I like the concept of approaching a sound. It supports the idea of a glide. Also, many say we start with /æ/ or /ɔ/, but again, I preffered a different explanation. I think of /ɑ/ as a general starting point. The tongue for /ɑ/ may be more forward than usual, though. A very strong "Ow!" indeed starts with /æ ...

Chimpanzee vs. Human child learning (1/2)
Chimpanzee vs. Human child learning (1/2) Tube. Duration : 3.50 Mins.
PLEASE READ THIS BEFORE COMMENTING -- Link to Part 2: youtube.com A brief, interesting clip from National Geographic's "Ape Genius" documentary, comparing how a chimpanzee learns when compared with human children. An experiment conducted at St Andrews University revealed that while children tried to tackle a puzzle without trying to analyze it, chimps of the same age used logic and managed to solve it This test shows that the human child, even when given tasks that obviously have no meaning, follows the instructions given to them by the perceived authority figure, whereas the chimpanzees are more pragmatic, and exclude the extraneous steps. I feel that this is a good example of why it is important to raise children to believe as many true things and disregard as many false things as possible. Children are our shared future, and teaching them to think critically and rationally, so they can grow up to be mindful, effective adults that use reason to help build a better world is vitally important. Article from the Sunday Times: "Young chimps make chumps of children" www.timesonline.co.uk NOTE: This is a dramatic reenactment of an experiment for a TV documentary. The actual experiment criteria: ** The children used ranged from 41-59 months. ** The chimps used ranged from 2-6 yo Chimps mature at 13-14 for females, 15-16 for males. ** The box always contains a sticker. My Favorite Dua in The Qur'an - Nouman Ali Khan Tube. Duration : 21.13 Mins.
A long time ago, Nouman Ali Khan made a du'a' (prayer) to Allah that changed his life. "Our Lord! Bestow on us from our spouses and our offspring who will be the comfort (Literally: the coolness) of our eyes, and make us leaders for the righteous" - Surat Al-Furqān 25:74 Recorded at the Sunday, July 4, 2010 at the MSA National Continental Conference in Chicago, IL. Courtesy of: www.youtube.com Nouman Khan began his formal Arabic training during his childhood schooling in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. He continued his Arabic grammar study in Pakistan, where he received a scholarship for ranking among the top 10 scores in the national Arabic studies board examination. Under the guidance of Dr. Abdus-Samie, founder and formal principal of Quran College in Faisalabad, Pakistan, he developed a keen methodical understanding of Arabic grammar. He further benefited from Dr. Abdus-Samie by internalizing his unique teaching methods and later translating his work into English for the benefit of his own students. Nouman currently serves as professor of Arabic at Nassau Community College and has taught Modern Standard and Classical Arabic at various venues for nearly 6 years with over 700 students. His handbook published by the Bayyinah Arabic Studies Institute for ARA-201 is also being used as a class aide at the Jaamiah-Al-Uloom Al-Islamiyyah, Institute of Islamic Education in Ajax, Canada. www.bayyinah.com

Richard Feynman Computer Heuristics Lecture
Richard Feynman Computer Heuristics Lecture Video Clips. Duration : 75.78 Mins.
Richard Feynman, Winner of the 1965 Nobel Prize in Physics, gives us an insightful lecture about computer heuristics: how computers work, how they file information, how they handle data, how they use their information in allocated processing in a finite amount of time to solve problems and how they actually compute values of interest to human beings. These topics are essential in the study of what processes reduce the amount of work done in solving a particular problem in computers, giving them speeds of solving problems that can outmatch humans in certain fields but which have not yet reached the complexity of human driven intelligence. The question if human thought is a series of fixed processes that could be, in principle, imitated by a computer is a major theme of this lecture and, in Feynman's trademark style of teaching, gives us clear and yet very powerful answers for this field which has gone on to consume so much of our lives today. No doubt this lecture will be of crucial interest to anyone who has ever wondered about the process of human or machine thinking and if a synthesis between the two can be made without violating logic.

Kids Marshmallow Experiment
Kids Marshmallow Experiment Tube. Duration : 2.90 Mins.
The marshmallow experiment is a famous test of this concept conducted by Walter Mischel at Stanford University and discussed by Daniel Goleman in his popular work. In the 1960s, a group of four-year olds were given a marshmallow and promised another, only if they could wait 20 minutes before eating the first one. Some children could wait and others could not. The researchers then followed the progress of each child into adolescence, and demonstrated that those with the ability to wait were better adjusted and more dependable (determined via surveys of their parents and teachers), and scored an average of 210 points higher on the Scholastic Aptitude Test.

Jiddu Krishnamurti was born on 11 May 1895 in Madanapalle, a small town in south India. He and his brother were adopted in their youth by Dr Annie Besant, then president of the Theosophical Society. Dr Besant and others proclaimed that Krishnamurti was to be a world teacher whose coming the Theosophists had predicted. To prepare the world for this coming, a world-wide organization called the Order of the Star in the East was formed and the young Krishnamurti was made its head. In 1929, however, Krishnamurti renounced the role that he was expected to play, dissolved the Order with its huge following, and returned all the money and property that had been donated for this work. From then, for nearly sixty years until his death on 17 February 1986, he travelled throughout the world talking to large audiences and to individuals about the need for a radical change in mankind. Krishnamurti is regarded globally as one of the greatest thinkers and religious teachers of all time. Also check out our new IELTS writing app on iTunes - http NARRATION: In this IELTS writing course you will find a number of different lessons that will help you improve your academic writing. In this lesson, we will look at some of the basic points you need to consider. Let's look back at the bad paragraph you saw at the beginning of this lesson. The first rule of academic writing is that you should avoid contractions such as don't and hadn't. Writing the complete word such as do not is better academically, and also adds an extra word to your word count. The second point for academic writing is that you should avoid using phrasal verbs such as give up. A phrasal verb is created when using a verb and another word together to create a particular meaning. It would be much better in this example to use a word like 'concede'. Academic writing also means that you should avoid emphasising with capital letters or being too direct. Using a word like stupid for example, will definitely lower your academic presentation. You should also avoid emphasising with exclamation marks. Although you may be asked for an opinion in academic writing, you are not being asked to show emotion and your writing should remain formal at all times ...

Introduction to the Electronic Visualization Laboratory @ UIC
Introduction to the Electronic Visualization Laboratory @ UIC Video Clips. Duration : 4.60 Mins.
The Electronic Visualization Laboratory (EVL) was founded in 1973. Throughout all that time, EVL has focused on the same basic areas. We primarily do research in the areas of advanced display design, visualization and digital analytics, high-speed networking, interaction and collaboration. Almost all the work done at EVL is interdisciplinary and collaborative; we work with people in art, the earth sciences, learning sciences, biomedical researchers, education, cognitive science, and other fields to apply our expertise to real problems in those disciplines. At EVL, we develop a new display device every couple of years to support new ways for visualizing and interacting with data. In the '90s, we revolutionized virtual reality by creating the projector-based CAVE. In the 2000's, we created the highest resolution display wall on the planet. We also create desks and tables, and tabletop displays. All of these displays are big to support collaborative, interdisciplinary work. Some of our students focus on integrating the hardware, others on writing the middleware that drive the hardware; some focus on working with domain scientists to create new applications to take advantage of that hardware. And, others study the way users interact with displays like these. For example, a couple years ago we built a high-resolution 100-touch table called TacTile. This table is used by museums to teach their visitors about water flow and rising sea levels, but also by scientists at Argonne ...
