postheadericon Developing PSTs' TPACK in Learning and Teaching Dvision of Fractions

Developing PSTs' TPACK in Learning and Teaching Dvision of Fractions Tube. Duration : 13.17 Mins.

Several studies indicated pre-service elementary school teachers (PSTs) lack of understanding of division of fractions (Ball, 1990; Schwartz, 2008). This was because PSTs were not familiar with conceptual understanding toward this content area (Tirosh, 2000). The purpose of this study is to exam how TPACK (technological, pedagogical, and content knowledge) can enhance PSTs conceptual understanding in division of fractions. The outcome of this study shows PSTs are able to create models to convey the concept; write mathematic sentences to describe these models; explain their understandings in words; and demonstrate connections between different mathematical representations by using TPACK. euronews learning world - At what age philosophy? Tube. Duration : 10.50 Mins.

www.euronews.com Fostering reasoning skills in young people can improve learning outcomes and one way of doing this is by teaching philosophy. Children are naturally curious and constantly asking "why?" Studying philosophy helps them not only explore answers to these sorts of questions, but develops critical thinking. *Hawaii: Young minds, old questions* Waikiki School in Honolulu has strived for a mindful approach to educaton for the last 20 years. In contrast to many other schools, here children as young as five study philosophy, or at least are encouraged to ask philosophical questions. Thomas Jackson, from Philosophy for Children, in Hawaii, said: "In kindergarten, we are filled with wonder and our wonder bubbles out in these extraordinary questions. As you follow most students through the school, that wonder diminishes. By the time they get to 3rd grade, 4th grade, they're already shutting down, they're responding to the expectations of the system and what the teacher wants." The Philosophy for Children Hawaii Centre helps the teachers here retain their wonder and their curiosity. The point is not to acquire specific facts or opinions, but to develop critical thinking skills. Courtney Carpenter, a teacher at the school, said: "Since they went to philosophy class, they've been taught that you can think of questions and you can come up with answers for the questions and there's no wrong answer. Then what happens is they get empowered and when they come into a classroom ...

postheadericon Chimpanzee vs. Human child learning (1/2)

Chimpanzee vs. Human child learning (1/2) Tube. Duration : 3.50 Mins.

PLEASE READ THIS BEFORE COMMENTING -- Link to Part 2: youtube.com A brief, interesting clip from National Geographic's "Ape Genius" documentary, comparing how a chimpanzee learns when compared with human children. An experiment conducted at St Andrews University revealed that while children tried to tackle a puzzle without trying to analyze it, chimps of the same age used logic and managed to solve it This test shows that the human child, even when given tasks that obviously have no meaning, follows the instructions given to them by the perceived authority figure, whereas the chimpanzees are more pragmatic, and exclude the extraneous steps. I feel that this is a good example of why it is important to raise children to believe as many true things and disregard as many false things as possible. Children are our shared future, and teaching them to think critically and rationally, so they can grow up to be mindful, effective adults that use reason to help build a better world is vitally important. Article from the Sunday Times: "Young chimps make chumps of children" www.timesonline.co.uk NOTE: This is a dramatic reenactment of an experiment for a TV documentary. The actual experiment criteria: ** The children used ranged from 41-59 months. ** The chimps used ranged from 2-6 yo Chimps mature at 13-14 for females, 15-16 for males. ** The box always contains a sticker. When the child gets the sticker, they trade that in for a food reward. ** The child is instructed to get the ...

euronews learning world - Game on! Video Clips. Duration : 9.03 Mins.

www.euronews.com Games are usually seen as recreaction but increasingly, educational games are being developed as an aid to learning. Computers and information technology are now part of daily life for many young people and some teachers are looking at ways of incorporating these new tools into their teaching. *UK: biology in 3D* In the Abbey School in Reading, in the UK, 3D movies have been used as teaching aids by the biology department since 2010, with good results. Ros Johnson, the Head of the science department, said: "When I started teaching science, we just had a blackboard really, and we'd have these models as well. So you'd stand in front of the class with a model and you'd try to get everybody to see it and perhaps you'd pass it around and then people at the back would get irritated because they didn't have it. And then we got the projectors onto whiteboard and we could use animation and things moved and it was better. And now we've got the 3D. Absolutely everybody in the class can see the 3D, it's hanging in the middle of the classroom, the image, you can rotate it so they can all look at it, you don't need to pass it around anymore and it's fantastic." The jury may stilll be out when it comes to 3D in cinemas but in education teachers are finding it invaluable. For now, images can be manipulated using a mouse, in the future, students may be able to move the images with their hands. 3D projectors are the same price as conventional ones, and equipping a class of ...
