postheadericon A History of Hebrew: Introduction

A History of Hebrew: Introduction Tube. Duration : 3.40 Mins.

A History of Hebrew DVD available through Amazon.Com - www.amazon.com --------------------------- This is the introduction to a much larger video production that I am working on and am looking for feedback (positive and negative) on the layout and content. --------------------------- The Hebrew Bible, called the Old Testament by Christians and the Tenach by Jews, is an Ancient Near Eastern text, which was written millennia ago within a time and culture that is vastly different from our own. The authors perspectives on life and the world around them is steeped with their own traditions, lifestyles, manners and thoughts. When reading and studying this text we can not interject our own cultural perspectives into the text, to do so would bring about interpretations and conclusions that are far removed from the authors intended meaning. Let's take the concepts of the past and the future to demonstrate how important it is to recognize that Biblical concepts are sometimes the opposite of our own. We perceive of the past as behind us and the future as before us. The Hebrew word for the past is temul and the word for the future is mahher. Temul means "in front" while mahher means "behind" And therefore in Hebraic thought the past is in front of you and the future is behind you. Why did the Ancient Hebrews perceive of time in this way? Because the past is known, it is laid out in front of you to see. while the future is not known and is therefore hidden behind you. We will be ...

postheadericon Introduction to the Electronic Visualization Laboratory @ UIC

Introduction to the Electronic Visualization Laboratory @ UIC Video Clips. Duration : 4.60 Mins.

The Electronic Visualization Laboratory (EVL) was founded in 1973. Throughout all that time, EVL has focused on the same basic areas. We primarily do research in the areas of advanced display design, visualization and digital analytics, high-speed networking, interaction and collaboration. Almost all the work done at EVL is interdisciplinary and collaborative; we work with people in art, the earth sciences, learning sciences, biomedical researchers, education, cognitive science, and other fields to apply our expertise to real problems in those disciplines. At EVL, we develop a new display device every couple of years to support new ways for visualizing and interacting with data. In the '90s, we revolutionized virtual reality by creating the projector-based CAVE. In the 2000's, we created the highest resolution display wall on the planet. We also create desks and tables, and tabletop displays. All of these displays are big to support collaborative, interdisciplinary work. Some of our students focus on integrating the hardware, others on writing the middleware that drive the hardware; some focus on working with domain scientists to create new applications to take advantage of that hardware. And, others study the way users interact with displays like these. For example, a couple years ago we built a high-resolution 100-touch table called TacTile. This table is used by museums to teach their visitors about water flow and rising sea levels, but also by scientists at Argonne ...

1. Introduction: Why Study the New Testament? Tube. Duration : 40.20 Mins.

Introduction to New Testament (RLST 152) This course approaches the New Testament not as scripture, or a piece of authoritative holy writing, but as a collection of historical documents. Therefore, students are urged to leave behind their pre-conceived notions of the New Testament and read it as if they had never heard of it before. This involves understanding the historical context of the New Testament and imagining how it might appear to an ancient person. 00:00 - Chapter 1. Why Take This Course? 13:23 - Chapter 2. The Bible As A Historical Text 24:17 - Chapter 3. Imagining An Ancient's Perspective 30:45 - Chapter 4. Q&A 35:08 - Chapter 5. Going over the Syllabus Complete course materials are available at the Open Yale Courses website: open.yale.edu This course was recorded in Spring 2009.
