Learn Science - Physical Science Video Clips. Duration : 53.80 Mins.

This video helps kids learn important facts and get ready for a physical science test for grades 3 through 8. Marko the Pencil takes learners on a journey to his Super Science Station where it's easy to grasp science concepts. Includes lab safety, scientific method, molecules, electricity, motion, energy, and much more. Meets the National Science Education Standards. Kevin's science test is coming up. Unfortunately, his study partner called and can't make it. Marko, a magical pencil, comes to the rescue by taking Kevin to Marko's Super Science Station. Kevin prepares for his test by first learning the details of lab safety. Next, Marko introduces Kevin to his friend Lumina, an animated light bulb. Lumina shows Kevin how to remember the 6 steps of the scientific method: Question, Gather, Hypothesize, Experiment, Conclude, and Report. It's time to move on to the Matter Learning Center to gain an understanding of atoms, the particles of an atom, molecules, and states of matter. Eventually, Kevin explores the properties of matter that include melting point, boiling point, conductivity, luster, color, odor, density, hardness, magnetism, and texture. Kevin also discovers the differences between physical changes and chemical changes as well as how mixtures differ from pure substances. Surprise! Kevins chair blasts off to the Electricity Learning Center to learn about electric circuits and how opposite electric charges attract each other. Kevin and Marko then move on to the ...

Teaching High School Science Through Inquiry: A Case Study Approach

Teaching High School Science Through Inquiry: A Case Study Approach Overviews
Case studies, tips, and tools to harness the power of students curiosity and improve achievement in science!

Now from the author of the best-selling Inquire Within comes a groundbreaking book devoted entirely to high school science teachers who desire to improve their teaching and enhance student learning through inquiry.

Teaching High School Science Through Inquiry offers a complete plan for nurturing a culture of inquiry in classrooms and schools. Drawing from current research, case studies, and personal anecdotes, Llewellyn leads teachers on a personal and professional journey to understanding inquiry-based instruction. Paying close attention to national standards, he shows teachers how to help students:

  • Develop an understanding of scientific concepts and the nature of science
  • Learn the skills and attitudes necessary to become independent thinkers and inquirers about the natural world
  • Identify questions and concepts that guide scientific investigations
  • Use logic and evidence to formulate and revise scientific explanations
The American Association for the Advancement of Science, the National Research Council, and the National Science Teachers Association all assert the importance of promoting scientific literacy through the perspectives and methods of inquiry. Teaching High School Science Through Inquiry makes it doable.

The Power of Picture Books in Teaching Math, Science, and Social Studies: Grades PreK-8

The Power of Picture Books in Teaching Math, Science, and Social Studies: Grades PreK-8

This book's 50-plus lessons--each based on a different picture book or story--will help classroom teachers build a foundation for teaching math, science, and social studies concepts to students. Each lesson uses children's literature to make challenging, abstract concepts relevant to children's lives, inviting them to learn these concepts while responding to a story's illustrations, theme, characters, and plot. The lessons also demonstrate how teachers can use children's literature to meet national standards in math, science, and social studies.

Chapters 1 through 5 set the stage for using picture books, discussing the effective, imaginative integration of literature into the classroom. Teachers will learn to create an environment that ensures that when children and books come together, the experience is enjoyable and thought provoking. Chapters 6 through 9 provide individual lessons, by grade level, with detailed activities based on specific books.

Included in each lesson are a brief summary of the book; the mathematics, science, or social studies standards addressed; the objective of the lesson; applicable language arts experiences; key concepts; materials and procedures needed to teach the lesson; possible assessment activities; and a Making Connections section that lists related, useful books and websites.

The following are a few benefits of the lessons: Math lessons present math concepts in the context of real-life situations, encouraging students to think critically and to solve problems; science lessons focus on the process of doing science through inquiry; social studies lessons teach students about other cultures and diversity in our society; and the activities include language arts components such as eliciting students responses to literature in oral, written, or visual form and providing opportunities for vocabulary development. ...Read more

postheadericon Khan Academy and the Effectiveness of Science Videos

Khan Academy and the Effectiveness of Science Videos Tube. Duration : 8.07 Mins.

My PhD: www.physics.usyd.edu.au It is a common view that "if only someone could break this down and explain it clearly enough, more students would understand." Khan Academy is a great example of this approach with its clear, concise videos on science. However it is debatable whether they really work. Research has shown that these types of videos may be positively received by students. They feel like they are learning and become more confident in their answers, but tests reveal they haven't learned anything. The apparent reason for the discrepancy is misconceptions. Students have existing ideas about scientific phenomena before viewing a video. If the video presents scientific concepts in a clear, well illustrated way, students believe they are learning but they do not engage with the media on a deep enough level to realize that what was is presented differs from their prior knowledge. There is hope, however. Presenting students' common misconceptions in a video alongside the scientific concepts has been shown to increase learning by increasing the amount of mental effort students expend while watching it.
