President Emeritus, The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching Charles E. Ducommun Professor of Education Emeritus, Stanford University Lee S. Shulman, who served as the eighth president of The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, is a frequent speaker regarding the study of teaching, the education of teachers, and cultures in higher education. His professional life centers around the study of learning and teaching. Dr. Shulman's recent research is on the improvement of teaching in elementary, secondary, and university settings; new approaches to the assessment of teaching; and the methods and quality of educational research. In addition to having spent 11 years at The Carnegie Foundation, he is The Charles E. Ducommun Professor of Education Emeritus at Stanford University. He is a founding co-director of the Institute for Research on Teaching. Dr. Shulman also is the former president of the American Educational Research Association (AERA) and of the National Academy of Education. He has received AERA's career award for Distinguished Contributions to Educational Research and the American Psychological Association's EL Thorndike Award for Distinguished Psychological Contributions to Education.
