Iron, Vitamin D May Lead to Smarter, Healthier Children Tube. Duration : 4.02 Mins.

I'mAlex Villarreal with the VOA Special English Health Report, from voaspecialenglish.com | http Many people have low amounts of iron in their blood. But pregnant women need extra iron for their own health and their baby's health. Iron is important to the development of a baby's brain and central nervous system. In poor countries, however, providing all pregnant women with iron supplements can be a financial issue. Some experts say giving supplements to babies after they are born is enough. Someone who disagrees is Parul Christian, a nutritionist at the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health in Maryland. She and other scientists have been doing research in Nepal. She says their latest findings should settle any question about the value of making sure every pregnant woman receives iron supplements. Iron is a micronutrient. Micronutrients are important substances that are found in small amounts in foods. The researchers first completed a study among poor women in Nepal ten years ago. During pregnancy some of the women received supplements containing iron and another micronutrient, folic acid.Ms. Christian says that study showed the supplements could improve child survival. Now the children are older. The researchers returned to Nepal and tested their neurological development. They found improved abilities among those whose mothers had received iron and folic acid during pregnancy and for three months after. Another new study looks at levels of vitamin D in babies. It says ...

The MYTH of AUTISM- How a misunderstood Epidemic is destroying our Children Video Clips. Duration : 6.00 Mins.

The MYTH of AUTISM- How a misunderstood Epidemic is destroying our Children. Dr. Michael Goldberg Knows What Causes Autism... and It Isn't Vaccines! THE MYTH OF AUTISM How a Misunderstood Epidemic is Destroying Our Children By Dr. Michael J. Goldberg with Elyse Goldberg. Everyone seems to agree that the United States is currently undergoing an epidemic of what is diagnosed as autism. But, in the history of society, there has never been "an epidemic" of any developmental or genetic disorder. So what is this "autism," which has come to affect the lives of so many? In The Myth of Autism. Dr. Michael Goldberg, the president of the Neuro-Immune Deficiency Medical Advisory Board, and his colleagues, illustrate why autism must be a symptom of a treatable, neurological disease that attacks the brain's immune system. Since it is not something truly developmental, it is not "locked in steel" from birth and, as a disease, it can and should be treated therapeutically. Through Goldberg's personal anecdotes, case studies, and original research, readers will come to understand that autism is: • Not psychological or developmental -- it is a medical disease • Caused by a dysfunction in the neuro-immune system • Similar to ADD/ADHD and chronic fatigue in that they all have different "labels" but are variations on the same thing: neuro-immune dysfunction Dr. Goldberg sympathizes with parents who believe that vaccines play some part in an autism diagnoses, but asserts this only seems to be ...

The Social Skills Picture Book Teaching play, emotion, and communication to children with autism

Winner of an iParenting Media Award, this book uses photographs of students engaging in a variety of real-life social situations. The realistic format plays to the visual strengths of children with ASD to teach appropriate social behaviors. Color photographs illustrate the "right way" and "wrong way" to approach each situation and the positive/negative consequences of each. A facilitator (parent, teacher, etc.) is initially needed to explain each situation, and ask questions such as "What is happening in this picture?" Children role-play skills until confident enough to practice them in real-life interactions.

Designed for preservice teachers, this text consolidates social studies content into a framework for practical instruction and lesson planning. It places social studies in a thoroughly modern context and explores how such factors as language diversity and standards at the local, state, and national level--affect teachers. The text retains its hallmark features, such as model unit lessons, teacher-tested activities, technology updates, and authentic children's work, and the Resource Handbook serves as a valuable tool for on-the-job use.

First Grade Writers: Units of Study to Help Children Plan, Organize, and Structure their Ideas Overviews

Grade 1

Foreword by Katie Wood Ray

First graders have no shortage of ideas. The hard part for them is putting thoughts together into a cohesive draft. Organizing and planning for writing defy simple description and aren't easily modeled for students, making them challenging topics to convey to young children. Where do you find the language and tactics to teach these subtle processes?

With First Grade Writers, Stephanie Parsons will change how you think about teaching the thinking behind writing. Parsons outlines five specific units of study for your writing workshop that help students prepare thoughtfully to write. Beginning with a September unit specially designed to introduce the writing workshop to first graders and build a classroom community that supports risk taking and learning, each successive unit builds upon the previous one and fosters independence. By June your students will know how to plan for writing out loud and on paper, leading to elegant, well-structured pieces. The units also help children to differentiate the planning and organization needed to write:

  • fiction
  • personal narrative
  • nonfiction Q & A books
  • pattern books.
Best of all, First Grade Writers is corner-of-the-desk practical with concise, logically laid-out descriptions of how each unit of study operates, a variety of helpful tables, charts, and assessment diagnostics, as well as elaborations, teaching points for minilessons and conferences, troubleshooting tips, and month-by-month planning assistance.

If you're new to first grade, Stephanie Parsons will give you ideas for top-notch teaching that will be invaluable as you establish your first writing workshop. If you're a veteran, the units in First Grade Writers will augment your existing workshop and help your students clearly conceptualize what high-quality writing looks like. Either way, you'll help them write better by thinking about the thinking behind good writing.
